Week 10 Term 2 2023
Dear Rosary Community
As we come to the end of Term 2 we have lots to be thankful for. When I think about my primary education, I remember the excursions and fun learning experiences. This week there was plenty of fun learning for children across our school.
The Reception children celebrated 100 days of schooling. Their costumes were fantastic!
The children in Years 3 to 6 participated in the SACPSSA Netball Carnival. Rosary entered 20 teams across the two days. The weather was kind to us and there were plenty of smiles on the children’s faces as they had a go at playing in different netball positions throughout the day. Thank you to Mr Brenton Campbell for his co-ordination and to our many parent volunteers. This is one event that couldn’t happen without volunteer support.
The Year 5/6 children are continuing to rehearse for their Wakakirri performance. For some of our Year 6 children this may be their final dance performance as many of them will not choose dance as a curriculum option during their secondary education. The Year 5/6 teachers and Ms Kimberly Slattery are working hard to source costumes, make props and prepare the children with the support of Groundforce.
Tomorrow our Year 3 children will compete in the Rosary Robo Cup. I look forward to supporting the winners at the SA Robo Cup competition. Thanks to Kim and Simon Coad for their support with the Robo Cup programme.
Today we celebrated the end of Semester 1 and NAIDOC week with a whole school Mass. Lachlan introduced the mass by saying:
NAIDOC refers to the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. The theme for NAIDOC Week 2023 is ‘For Our Elders’. As a Catholic school, we commit to positive change for our First Nations people.
In today’s Mass we are reminded about how Jesus welcomed all people ... It means that we welcome all people, that all people are equal in God’s eyes. As the community of Rosary School, we pray together for God’s continued love and guidance, that we can treat all people equally and show care to everybody.
Thank you to everyone for another great term at Rosary School. Enjoy the break from routine – I hope the break gives you an opportunity to slow down and enjoy a quieter pace for a couple of weeks.
Kind regards
Susan
"I was a stranger and you welcomed me into your home" (Matthew 25:35)
Every evening, I walk my two dogs across Grenfell Street and into the Parklands towards the centre of Adelaide. By 5pm, it is almost dark and inevitably freezing. One of the first things I see every evening is the increasing number of tents in the middle of the Parklands and I am forced to reflect on how these people are surviving the winter as it gets colder by the day. These tents are some people's permanent accommodation. As the cost-of-living crisis increasingly affects all of us, we are still challenged to consider those in our immediate vicinity who are doing it extremely tough
For the last five weeks of this term, our school community has been collecting non-perishable items for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. While families in our community are facing many personal challenges of their own, the generosity of the Rosary Community never ceases to amaze. I collected all of the baskets from classrooms over the course of Monday and Tuesday, in readiness for the volunteers from Vinnies to collect from our school on Thursday. The back breaking work in lifting the baskets was the clearest indicator of just how much all of our families have contributed. On behalf of Vinnies, I thank you for your wonderful generosity.
My colleagues at Vinnies are deeply appreciative of our response to the Winter Appeal, as their stocks are now running very low, and our contributions will allow them to respond to a great deal of need in our local community.
NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday (July 2-July 9 2023). The acronym NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginals and Islanders Day Observance Committee. The 2023 NAIDOC Week theme is For Our Elders Across every generation, Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in communities and families.
At every daily prayer gathering at Rosary School, at every assembly and at every Mass and liturgy, we commence with an Acknowledgement of Country. In doing this as members of a Catholic community, we are committing ourselves to true reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to helping to create a nation where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children will have the same life chances and choices as non-Indigenous children, and the length and quality of a person’s life will not be determined by their racial background.
The gold coins contributed by all students for our Casual Dress Day on Friday will be donated to Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Adelaide. This centre is a community-based organisation that works to improve the lives of those in need by offering programs that are designed to promote self-esteem and healing. In addition to many other programs, they work in conjunction with Vinnies to ensure that toiletry bags are available to those people that have an unexpected stay in hospital. Bags for women, men and children are produced and each bag includes items that are of specific need to the user. Our donation will be put to very good use.
Thank you

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, all students from Year 3 to Year 6 took part in the SACPSSA Netball Carnival at the Netball SA Stadium.
The carnival was organised by the South Australian Catholic Primary Schools Sports Association (SACPSSA). This event is designed to promote the sport of netball amongst primary students. As you can see below, we had an amazing time!
Every year at the beginning of Term 3, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
Just a reminder about the upcoming P&F quiz night, Saturday 12th August.
Purchase your tickets and food platters for the night on the Qkr app or you may miss out!
Thanks to those who have donated to our cause, please don't forget that we are still accepting donations which can be dropped at the front office.
