Week 2 Term 2 2023
Dear Rosary Community
We have had a wonderful start to the term with lots of excitement learning. The 5/6 children have begun their rehearsals for Wakakirri, have commenced the Become – Ready Set Go program and the Year 6 children are working with Arch D to develop podcasts. The exhibition of the Year 4 children’s artwork opens at the Newmarch Gallery this Friday night. Leah Grant will work with the other Year 4 children on Friday to complete the Stobie Pole art. Our Year 3 children will participate in a Rosary Robo Cup and then the winning teams will represent Rosary at the SA Robo Cup Competition. The Year 2 children will be learning about Space and visiting the Planetarium, our Year 1 children will be covering biological science this term and will watch beans grow in the classroom. The Reception children will be learning about living and non-living things with a big excursion to Monarto Zoo.
The building works have commenced, and I thank the children, staff, parents and OSHC staff for their patience as we navigate the changing landscape of Rosary School. Attached to this email is a pedestrian guide developed by Badge in conjunction with the City of Prospect. The most significant part of this guide is the closing of the footpath on the northern side of Staples Court, adjacent to the school building site. Pedestrians will need to walk on the southern side of Staples Court in front of the school.
I would also like to remind parents not to use Staples Court as a drop off and pick up zone. The fencing in front of the school on Staples Court will mean that doing a U-turn will not be possible.
On Tuesday this week the Year 5/6 Community Leaders had the opportunity to participate in the City of Prospect Draft Budget Community Consultation. Along with other local schools, our children looked at the proposed council projects and then made decisions about which projects should be funded. The Year 5/6 Community Leaders discerned that the maintenance and upgrade of public toilets and then projects that were proposed to keep the community safe were the most important items to fund. Following this the leaders focussed on environmental projects and then funded events and playgrounds for the community to enjoy. City of Prospect residents may be pleased to know that the Rosary leaders also thought that reducing rates should be a priority so delivered a surplus in their budget! An address by Mayor Larwood about the levels of government and a lovely morning tea was enjoyed by our Year 5/6 Community Leaders.
The Mother’s Day Stall this morning was a place of big decision making where children carefully selected gifts for their mothers and grandmothers. I look forward to brekky tomorrow morning on the Jubilee Court and I thank our Parents and Friends Committee for their co-ordination of these events.
I hope all mothers have a wonderful weekend.
Uniform News
Over the past 12 months the Uniform Committee have been meeting and are now ready to put a recommendation to the School Board. Campus School Wear are waiting for confirmation about any changes Rosary School will be making to their uniform and consequently are low in stock of some items (particularly the winter woollen jumper). The School Board will meet on Tuesday, 23rd May and an announcement will be made to the school community following this meeting. Until an announcement has been made by the School Board, your child/ren are welcome to wear their sports top with their winter uniform. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

May Christ rise in the world as I practise believing.
May Christ rise in the world as I practise love.
May Christ rise in the world as I practise hope.
May Christ rise in the world as I practise surrender.
May Christ rise in the world as I practise courage.
May Christ rise in the world as I practise generosity.
We are just under two weeks into Term 2 and already the gifts that staff and students bring to this community are very much in evidence. It has been a whirlwind start as always. For the teaching staff at Rosary School, the enthusiastic approach that your daughters and sons bring to their learning is something that always inspires us.
Rosary Staff Spirituality Day
Our pupil free day at the start of Term 2 involved the staff of Rosary School participating in our annual Staff Spirituality Day. The program that we designed involved each of our members of staff being involved in a Day of Service in our local community. We offered our gifts and skills to a range of volunteer agencies, whether that be cooking a barbeque, hospitality, manual work or administrative skills.
After gathering as colleagues to celebrate mass with Fr Paul at Our Lady of the Rosary Church at 9am, we moved to work in groups at the Vinnies Women's Crisis Centre, the Vinnies Men's Crisis Centre, Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Catherine House, Rosary School and the local Vinnies Chapter.
I would like to commend all of my colleagues for their commitment on the day. It was a true day of Christian Service as we connected with so many individuals and so many communities over the day and our work will make a real difference in the lives of a large number of people.
Rosary School Ministry Care
During the course of our Staff Spirituality Day on Monday, a number of Rosary School staff made bulk meals that we have placed in our school freezer. Our aim is to provide these meals to families in our community, who may be facing challenging times caused by hospitalisation, wider health issues, employment challenges or financial difficulties.
If you are aware of any families who are doing it tough at the moment, please ask them if they would appreciate any support from our school community. If so, we can reach out to them and assist through providing meals for the family at this time.
In our support for each other as members of this community, I would also like to encourage other members of our community to make some bulk meals that we can have ready to provide for other families who are facing challenges at the moment.
If you are interested in joining the Rosary School Ministry Care Program and making meals for families in our community, please email me at stephen.campion@rosary.catholic.edu.au
During the course of Term 1, we supported Caritas' Project Compassion.
I would like to gratefully acknowledge all of the students, families and staff who have generously contributed to the work of Caritas, in our support of Project Compassion in 2023.
We raised a wonderful total of $2,000.It has truly been a team effort. So many students in many classes took up the challenge of increasing their awareness of the work of Caritas and how we can live more simply in order to contribute to the well-being of others who do not have the same opportunities as we do.The support of staff and parents has been vital in this process, and we are most grateful. We are blessed to have such a generous hearted and supportive community.
Catholic Education Week is being celebrated in Catholic schools throughout South Australia from 15 – 21 May 2023.
This week is an opportunity to reflect on and share all the things that we love about Rosary School and what makes our community special.

YEAR 4 CAMP 2023 – ALDINGA
We have had a busy start to the new school year engaging in new learnings, developing our study skills and building new relationships. However, the highlight was in Week 11.
All three Year 4 classes travelled to Aldinga to attend an overnight Aboriginal Studies and Kaurna culture camp. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn more about the Indigenous Australian people. Our guide Drew, a young Kaurna man provided perspectives about living off the land, tracking animals in the bush, bush tucker and shared stories about some of his ancestors.
Whilst on camp the students participated in a variety of activities which included a cultural bushwalk guided by Drew, a session about Aboriginal artefacts and symbols, learning traditional activities such as spear throwing, and navigation using the story of the Rainbow Serpent. We also had the opportunity to create Aboriginal art by recording a story using traditional Aboriginal Symbols to decorate a boomerang. The highlight of the camp however, was learning about traditional cooking and a farewell smoking ceremony. We were taught how to wrap a fish in clay and cook it using coals in the ground. At first, some students were not too sure how it would taste but most devoured the trout. When it was time to eat, some were even brave enough to eat the eyes as well! There were lots of mixed feelings about this! Everyone wondered who would be brave enough.
The two days were jam packed with activities which had everyone feeling exhausted and ready for sleep when lights were out at 10:00pm. The evening event was a blast. This included a quiz and team activities such as moving an oreo biscuit from the forehead to the mouth without using hands.
Overall, it was an excellent camp, with lots of laughter, fun, team work and learning outside of the classroom. An experience that will never be forgotten!
Some comments from Year 4 students -
Emile- “ Camp was really interesting because I got to learn lots of new things about the Indigenous culture.”
Maro- “ At camp I learnt about directions through the navigation activity we did and that sticks in the wild are used to make spears.”
Ruby- “Camp was so much fun. I learnt how Indigenous people hunt for food.”
Summar– “I had a great time on camp and I learnt to cook fish wrapped in clay under the ground.”
Audrey- “ It was really fun and I enjoyed it so much. It was interesting to learn how to cook fish with clay.”
Stella- “ At camp I enjoyed being in our cabins with my friends and staying up late talking.”
Italian Language and Culture Day 2023
This week we celebrated Italian Language and Culture at Rosary School. The Year 5/6 children presented at an assembly and told the school about their research into Architettura Italiana - Italian Architecture and their research into the Italian language. The Year 2 classes also entertained us with their songs, 2CW sang the song, Che Tempo Fa?, Year 2NS sang the song, Gli Animali Che Fanno Chiasso and Year 2AF sang the song, Andiamo in Italia.
The children were molto bravi!
This was followed by lovely gelato on a warm Autumn day! Buono!!
