Week 6 Term 3 2022
Dear Rosary Community
There has been lots of activity over the past two weeks but one of the most significant for our Catholic children has been the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Eucharist. Some of our children will complete their Sacraments of initiation this coming weekend. One of the privileges of my leadership is to be part of these celebrations and I congratulate our 28 students on these important milestones in their faith journey.
Some of the other new experiences provided for children have included our Year 3 children attending a Science Week Show at the City of Prospect, our Year 4 students commencing working with Matt Richards an Apple Specialist Consultant on using Keynote, and our Year 5/6 children’s excursion to the Art Gallery and Parliament House where Lucy Hood, our local MP lead a tour that supported student’s learning about Australia’s three levels of government.
One of our highlights each year is our annual Book Week Assembly and Parade. The community engagement in costume organisation and then lining the streets of Prospect Road for the parade was wonderful. The detour through the City of Prospect Library was also a wonderful new initiative this year. I thank our teachers and our volunteers for making these opportunities happen for our students.
All children in Reception to Year 6 have commenced working with Ground Force Studio to prepare for a School Concert on the evening of November 25th. I look forward to the students showcasing their dance performances for our families.

This week Adam West has informed me that he will not return to Rosary School in 2023.
Whilst I haven’t had the opportunity to work with Adam in my role as Principal, as a beginning teacher I had the privilege of working alongside Adam as a Year 4 teaching partner. Adam was a great support to me – sharing his skills, knowledge and expertise as I began my teaching career. He was a wonderful first teaching partner and he has been a valued member of the Rosary School Community over the past 20 years. I thank him for his work at Rosary School and wish him all the best in his career.

At Rosary School, the prayer life of the school is very strong. It is not only central to the religious education programme, but it goes across whole life of the school.
Our young people may often give a very simple definition of prayer, namely describing it as ‘talking to God’. Although this is true to some degree, it is ultimately a relationship between us and God.
After three months at Rosary School I can confidently confirm to our parents/caregivers who have chosen a Catholic education for their daughters and sons, that the prayer life in our community is at the centre of all that we do and all that we are.
After thirty years in Catholic school, I have observed that prayer in our schools takes place in a variety of ways. We do know there is no ‘right’ way to pray and that people like to pray in different ways according to their life experiences and their personality.
One conclusion that I have come to is that prayer needs to occur frequently and at appropriate times, but we also need to teach students that we spend time in prayer when required. An example may be a time of class sharing when the class learns that a member of the community is ill or perhaps there has been an argument between students during recess or lunchtime. This is an appropriate time for prayer, because there is a need for students to stop and become aware of the presence of God within them and who our God is calling us to be.
Our role as teachers and administrative staff at Rosary School is to offer regular opportunities for students to open their hearts to God. God is alive in us all anyway, but by praying we can know it.
All of my teaching colleagues promote prayer within their individual classrooms in a rich variety of relevant and meaningful ways.
Every classroom has a prayer table. On these tables are Christian images and symbols, always incorporating a crucifix and the Bible. It allows a focal point for the room and for prayer time. In every classroom, our day begins with prayer.
Every whole school gathering commences with prayer and the Kaurna Acknowledgment of Country. Students expect this to happen and are wholly respectful at these times. Our school gym becomes a sacred space in these moments.
As a snap shot of the strength of the prayer life of Rosary School over a seven day period, I have been present when two Year 5 students beautifully constructed and led prayer at the start of the school day for their Year 5/6 class; I have been part of a beautiful Year 2 liturgy in our staff room last Thursday; I have witnessed a rich and affirming Reception liturgy at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish today; I have been privileged to be at numerus staff gatherings over the last week where colleagues have led the rest of the community in prayer.
In the midst of this rich prayer life, it goes without saying that we have been blessed to celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion with twenty-eight of our young people and their families over last weekend and this weekend. At the conclusion of the 10am Mass this Sunday at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, we will have young people who have completed their Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church. We keep these young people and their families in our prayers at this time.

Catholic Schools Music Festival combined rehearsal
Here are some photos and student thoughts from our recent excursion. We are really looking forward to our final performance in Week 10 of this term.
"On 24th of August, the 5/6 Rosary School choir went to Loreto College for a combined choir rehearsal. We sang many songs with other schools and got together with other schools to get a feel of what it would sound like on stage." – Isla.
"We went to Loreto College for a combined choir rehearsal. We sung all our songs with the firsts, who are usually singing higher and different words so we had to get used to our pitch so that we wouldn’t start singing their pitch. Ms Rothall helped us to improve. Although the recess break was short we got to meet other schools, it was a fun day." – Teodora.
"Last week we joined together with other students to form the festival choir. We went to Loreto College for the combined rehearsal. We were there for the whole day singing songs and came back to school at lunch. Some of the songs we practised were YMCA, ABBA, That’s how it goes!, Seal Lullaby, May a Rainbow Run Beside You, Lord's Prayer, One Song and City of Music." – Riya
Thank you
