Week 8 Term 1 2021
Dear Rosary Community
This week I had the privilege of joining the Year 6 students, Sita Catalano, Maria Boccaccio and Brenton Campbell on camp at Walkers Flat. Active Education co-ordinated a series of activities for the children to engage in. Raft building and kayaking were certainly two of the favourites! I would like to thank our wonderful staff for their organisation of this event and for the way in which they supported and cared for all of our children. I am now looking forward to joining our Year 4 children and teachers on camp at the end of this term.
I am really looking forward to meeting all of our parents at the Parents & Co at the Cali on Friday 26th March.
This coming Tuesday evening at 7.00 pm we have our Annual General Meeting.
This meeting will include the presentation of:
- The Principal’s report
- Other reports that are considered appropriate for the occasion
- The previous year’s financial activity and
- The ensuing year’s draft budget.
At this meeting we will also elect parent Board Members for the ensuing year. We currently have three vacancies on our School Board and I welcome parents to email me if they are interested in being part of the School Board. Over the next couple of years, the School Board will oversee the Masterplan and school improvements. I think it would be a great time to join the Board and support the development of the school.
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Rosary School will be completing the assessments online during Week 3 of Term 2, commencing on Monday, 3rd May.
To prepare for the assessment, all Year 3 and 5 students will participate in a National Coordinated Practice Test on Thursday of Week 9, 25th March at 11:30 am. The purpose of the practice test is to check and prepare our platform in preparation for online testing. Please be aware student performance will not be assessed for the practice test. All students will require headphones, that are wired (not blue-tooth e.g. airpods) for the practice test and NAPLAN online. If your child does not already have a pair, please organise to send to school.
The privacy collection notice and NAPLAN Online information for parents and carers will be distributed to Year 3 and 5 classes this week.
The national online assessment platform has been designed to comply with relevant national data security policies, guidelines and standards. Further information about the NAPLAN testing in May, will be shared in Term 2.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN and your child’s participation please contact your child's teacher, our NAPLAN Coordinator, Caroline Price caroline.price@rosary.catholic.edu.au or myself susan.hennessy@rosary.catholic.edu.au
LENT
Our current season of Lent, as we look forward to Holy Week, calls us to commit ourselves to strengthening our faith through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
This year, Pope Francis has offered a timely reflection to speak to our hearts about Lent and how it is a time of reorientation towards service and love, of God and towards each other.
In particular, he highlights the broader meaning of ‘fasting’ as being far beyond mere food and drink. He states:
- Fast from hurting words and say kind words.
- Fast from sadness and be filled with patience
- Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope
- Fast from worries and have trust in God.
- Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.
- Fast from pressures and be prayerful.
- Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy.
- Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.
- Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
- Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Rosary School played host last week to the Parish’s first family workshop for the year in preparation for students to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This included the parents and their children from Rosary School, together with other parish schools including St Dominics, Blackfriars, and the children from the parish. The liturgy for Rosary students will take place next Wednesday, 24th March, 6pm at Rosary Church. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, this event is only open to the students and their immediate family. I ask that you keep each child and their family in your prayers and thoughts throughout this time.
Details about the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist (Terms 2/3) will be available to parents as soon as it is obtainable from the Archdiocese of Adelaide.
It is with great excitement that I announce Rosary School has subscribed to the QKR App.
This is an additional platform used for making school payments faster and more conveniently from a secure mobile app anywhere and at any time. There is also the option for a website payment alternative for families without a smartphone or tablet.
Benefits include:
- Copying orders/payments from one week to the next to save time
- Paying directly from a credit or debit card without pre-loading funds to a third-party account
- Tracking transactions easily with online receipts.
At Rosary School we are initially using QKR for payments such as school fees, camp fees and Parents and Friends’ ice blocks. We hope to add more products in the future as we become accustomed to QKR.
Attached below is a guide to getting started.
For more information please contact Melanie Fazio melanie.fazio@rosary.catholic.edu.au (Finance Officer).
Yours sincerely,

The Daily Five Literacy Block
The start of the year was dedicated to launching “The Daily Five” and instilling literacy habits that allow for independent work, paired work and group work.
Read to Self
The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose on your just-right reading level. It soon becomes a habit.
Read to Someone
Reading to someone allows for more time to practice strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding and hear your own voice.
Work onWriting
Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day.
Listen to Reading
We hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers.
Spelling/Word Work
Correct spelling allows for more fluent writing, thus speeding up the ability to write and get thinking down on paper. This is an essential foundation for writers.
Take a look at our photo gallery to see “The Daily Five” in action.
