Week 8 Term 1 2023
Dear Rosary Community
Over the past two weeks the Year 3 and 5 children have participated in four NAPLAN assessments. Children approached these assessments with a positive mindset and should be congratulated for their resilience.
I asked some students what they are enjoying learning at school:
- “learning to write my letters” – Leon, ROC
- “counting by twos” – Jayden, 1RM
- “recount writing – I like writing about what I did on the weekend” – Hannah, 2CW
- “learning to draw a face” – Ashley, 3TR
- “narrative writing – I like to make up stories” – Henry, 4OA
- “maths fraction number puzzles” – Sophia, 5/6AR
- “science – the weather and erosion” – Caitlin, 5/6NT
The children answered the question immediately with delight on their faces. I am thankful to the staff for the work they do to make learning fun and engaging.
We have a number of community events coming up …
- On Sunday morning the Year 2s will lead our participation in the Parish Family Mass. I hope lots of families are able to join us at the Church and connect with other Year 2 families over a cuppa in the Parish Centre following Mass.
- School AGM and Strategic Planning session on 28th March. The 2022 AGM School Performance Report is attached for reading prior to the meeting. The Finance Report will be presented at the AGM. 2022_School_Performance_Report
- 27 children will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday, 30th March at 6:30pm.
- On Friday, 31st March we have a parent gathering at the Caledonian Hotel (Cali) in North Adelaide. This is organised by our Parents and Friends Committee and is an opportunity for parents to make some new connections in our school community.
Regards
Susan
It is the time of the year when some of our young people at Rosary School are preparing to soon receive their first Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is a beautiful sacrament, instituted by Christ as a way to offer us His Mercy and Grace. This year, we have twenty-seven students who will receive the sacrament. The journey for these young people has seen them supported on this road by their families, their friends, our parish and our school.
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus comforts us. He strengthens us on our journey. We are reconciled with God, with the Church, and with the people we have hurt. Through this sacrament the Church celebrates Jesus’ gift of forgiveness.
Conscience is a voice within each of us. It helps us to know what God wants us to do. It helps us know the difference between right and wrong. It helps us know the ways we have sinned. The Holy Spirit helps us to listen to and follow our conscience. Before we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we prepare ourselves. We examine our conscience.
As we have journeyed with our young people, we have had two information sessions, as well as a dedicated day at school this Wednesday to help prepare our students. This day also enabled their classmates to understand what was happening for their friends, as they prepare to receive the sacrament.
As our young people move towards receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday, March 30 we encourage members of our community to offer a prayer of support for them.
Dear God, our young people are preparing to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. We know that you are a loving and merciful God. Help them to be truly sorry for what they may have done wrong. Forgive them for when they may have failed to help others. May they follow Jesus in all things with the help of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
As we move towards Holy Week and the conclusion of Lent, we will have a series of liturgies for Holy Week. Parents and family members are welcome to join us under the jacaranda tree for any of the following community gatherings, as we reflect on the events of Holy Week.
- Friday March 31, 9am Reception Palm Sunday Liturgy
- Monday April 3, 9am Year 1 Liturgy
- Tuesday April 4, 9am Year 4 Liturgy
- Wednesday April 5, Year 6 Stations of the Cross Liturgy
- Thursday April 13, Year 2 Resurrection Liturgy
As we move towards this weekend, the fifth Sunday of Advent, we begin to reflect ever more on the suffering that Jesus was about to face, and we take time to consider ways that we can live better and reduce the suffering of those around us. As a Catholic school, we are strong in our support of Caritas and Project Compassion. Please may I give families one final reminder as we move towards Holy Week to assist their young people in making contributions to their Project Compassion, in advance of returning them to school on Tuesday, April 11.
Thank you as always for your support with all of this.

This term in Year 5/6 we have been following the ‘Growing with Gratitude’ program in Health. Growing with Gratitude is a resilience program that builds and protects young people’s mental wellbeing. This happens through teaching skills based on gratitude, kindness, positive reflection, empathy, mindfulness, and serving others.
In our most recent lesson, we explored the power of compliments. Each student had a piece of paper stuck on their back. All students then wandered around the room to write compliments on their peer’s piece of paper. To give and receive compliments felt wonderful and by participating in this activity, we were feeling content and ready to begin our learning for the day.
This is what some of the students of 5/6AR had to say when reflecting on this Growing with Gratitude task:
How did it make you feel to read positive things about you?
“All of those compliments that I have received today was pretty heart warming” - Maison
How did it make you feel when you were writing compliments on your classmates back?
“It felt good because I don’t really say compliments to other people and I was very proud of myself” - Matilda
Was it hard to compliment someone? Why/why not?
“No, it was very easy to write on others back because I knew it would make them feel good”
